George Fred Humphries, 89, of Salinas, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007. He was born April 8, 1918 in St. Louis, Missouri to Horace and Marie (Archambault) Humphries.

He enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and was honorably discharged in 1937. He was a veteran of World War II and served as a staff sergeant at Camp Roberts, CA and in the Asiatic Pacific Theater on Saipan. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal upon his honorable discharge.

He operated an upholstery shop for many years in Alisal and was a commercial fisherman. He felt Moss Landing was the most beautiful harbor on the west coast, and worked tirelessly for its preservation, serving 20 years as a commissioner on the Moss Landing Harbor District Board.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Alice and Frances,
