Andrew Bergquist, 98, of Bemidji, died Saturday at North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were at Cease Family Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji.

Mr. Bergquist was born Aug. 15, 1889 in Loland, Denmark, to Nels and Anna Anderson. At 6, he moved to Smoland, Sweden, and at 13 left Sweden for the United States, arriving in St. Paul in 1902. He moved to Bemidji in 1904 and started working for the M&I Railroad in 1905, living first in Bemidji and later in Redby. He married Josephine Workman Oct. 27, 1908 in Great Falls, MT. He worked as a conductor for the M,RL&M Railway until 1938, when the line was discontinued. After farming and driving school bus for a couple of years in Redby, he moved to the state of Washington where he worked for the Great Northern Railway until 1943. From 1943 to 1946, he was part owner of a grocery and hardware store in Blackduck. After his wife died in 1951, he moved to Oregon and California. In 1972 he returned to Bemidji to live with his daughter. He had been a resident of North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since 1983. He was a member of Bemidji Lodge #233.

He is survived by his daughter, Beth Wernberg of Bemidji; a brother, Gunnar Anderson of Regina, Saskatchewan; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, two brothers and a sister. (Bemidji Pioneer May 23, 1988)
