Mrs. Benjamin Felter
At her home in Walworth, Wis., on Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 1897, occured the death of Mrs. Benjamin Felter.
Miss Samantha Bute was born in Summit, Schoharie Co., N. Y., April 29, 1817. She was united in marriage to Benjamin Felter Oct. 6, 1836. This was a long and happy union, extending over a space of sixty one years, one month and fifteen days.
Mr. and Mrs. Felter settled at Fulton, N. Y. where they lived until May, 18rt. Mrs Felter being in very poor health, a change of climate was advised, hence thier removal to the west. The family settled at Barrington, Ill, in 1846. Here they resided ten years when they removed to Antioch, Ill., where they lived until five years ago. In 1892 they moved to their present residence in order to be near their daughter, Mrs. Frank Rodman.
This union was blessed with ten children, five of whom have been silently laid away, while five, together with their aged father, remain to mourn the loss of a kind and affentionate mother and a faithful and devoted wife. The sons and daughters now living are: Addison Felter of Antioch, Lewis Felter, Mrs. Frank Rodman, Mrs. Harness and Fidelia Brooks of Lyn Haven, Va., whose ill helath prevented her being present at the funeral.
Mrs. felter was converted when 17 years of age and joined the E. Worcester Baptist church. Her settlement in the sparsely populated west was unfortunate in not giving her church privileges. It is therefore in her home life that we must look for the development of her Christian character. Her patience is known well to those only who were closely related to her at the time of the many trials which she, with her companion, experienced during their early settlement in the west. It was not her disposition to complain, because of inconveniences and harships. It was hers to encourage, sepak the cheering word and hope for the best. She was the kindest of neighbors, always ready to lend a helping hand in times of sickenss and distress. She was ever willing to sacrifice her own pleseure and comfort for the relief of others. But separation must come. The one is take, the other left. In that quiet , comfortable home so carefully watched over by a loving daughter and her husband, the Angel of Death came. We regoice in th hope that she has gone to her reward, to be with Jesus, who is the "Resurrection and the Life," to whom early in life she came and in whom she ever trusted.
The funeral service occurred in the Walworth Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock p.m., the pastor, Rev. Jospeh Jenkins, officiating.
Among the relatives present were: Mr. and Mrs. Addison Felter and daughter, Gertie, of Antioch, her sister, Mrs. Catherine Wood, of Dwight, a niece, Mrs. Addie Parked of Barrington, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marriott of Delavan.
A peculiar coincidence in connection with Mrs. Felter's death is the fact that her eldest brother, Manuel Bute, died suddently of heart disease the Thurday preceding her death, at Hancock, Wis. Four in this family have died suddenly and in almost the same manner.
