Benj. Felter Dead
Departed This Life at the Home of Frank Rodman
Wednesday, Dec 28 [1904] at the Advanced Age of 93 Years, 1 Month, 10 Days
-----------------
Mr. Benjamin Felter, who at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rodman, departed this life on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1904, was born near Rensselearville, Albany Co. N.Y., Nov. 18, 1811.
He was one of eight children, five sons and three daughters, born to Matthew and Elizabeth Felter. In his younger days he had very poor health. At the age of 25, he married Samantha Bute, a native of Summit, Schoharla [Scholharie] Co. N. Y. This union was very happy and was exceptional in that it continued over sixty one years.
Mr. and Mrs. Felter were blessed with the following children: Addison, who resides on the old home-farm near Antioch, Ill; George who died at the age of 23; Lewis who lives at Saquache, Colo; Mary, now Mrs. George Harness who resides in Algona, Iowa,; Mrs. Fidelia Brooker who died in Virginia, leaving one daughter; and Catherine, now Mrs. Frank Rodman.
Mr. and Mrs. Felter first settled in N. Y. , state, but hard times determined him for a western career. With a wife and five children, but with only $90, he started by way of the lakes to Chicago which was then a small and unimportant village. He settled in Cuba Township, Lake Co., Ill., but soon removed to Barrington where he entered 40 acres of wild land from the Government and erected on it a log house. After five years he sold to the C. & N. W. R.R. Co., and purchased a farm which was exchanged for the present home farm in 1853. This farm, consisting of 107 acres, fronting on Lake Catharine, possessed a double log house which after ten years of prosperity due to the fertility of the soil, the strenuous and constant industry coupled with the strict economy of Mr. Felter and his faithful wife, was replaced by a more commodious residence in which they lived until 1894 when old age and infirmity influenced them to accept the hearty invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Rodman to live in a convenient house near their residence where they could be carefully ministered unto as their declining years required. The faithful mother and worthy companion of more than three score years departed this life in 1897 since which time he has made his home principally with Mr. and Mrs. F. Rodman; but a intervals resided for weeks and ever for several months with Mr. and Mrs. George Harness. In each of these homes he received the most devoted attention and loving service that willing hands and loving hearts could render.
Mr. Felter was industrious; the forest and field he welcomed as an opportunity for his exertions. He was economical, a quiet and peaceable neighbor and believed and practiced the principles of honesty and integrity. He accepted the Bible and favored its promotion throughout the church and Sunday school. He believed in righteousness and rejoiced in its advancement. He was a kind and affectionate father, desiring and planning for the welfare of his children and loved his grandchildren with fond delight.
Appropriate funeral services were conducted both at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. Rodman and at the Brick church on Friday afternoon by Rev. Joseph Jenkins of Toulon, Ill. The body was laid away in the beautiful Brick church cemetery. Among the number relatives and friends attending were Mr. and Mrs. Addison Felter of Antioch, Ill, Mr. and Mrs. George Harness of Angola, Ia, Dr. Rodman of Delavan, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marrott of Delavan, Mr. Harness of Solon Mills, Ill, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Davis of Delavan.
