Paul Y. McCormick Jr. of Chester Springs, Pa

Born in 1955, beloved son of Paul Yager McCormick (who predeceased him in 2013) and Sara Brown McCormick, cherished brother of Louise Sharp (Bob), Kathleen McCormick Mercer (Chris) and Sara Regalia (Bob), Paul lived a full life for over two years after his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He was a 1973 graduate of Newark High School where, in addition to excelling in academics, he was a founding member of the Kazoo Pep Band, and one of the principals in the infamous incident regarding gunpowder creation in the Honors Chemistry lab. At Bucknell University he studied chemical engineering and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. After graduating in 1977 the story is told that, when interviewing with Phillip Morris he told the interviewer, "No I don't smoke your cigarettes but I do drink your beer." He elected to go into the pharmaceutical industry with Wyeth Labs where he worked from 1977 - 1996. After a successful career there he retired quite young-not because he was wealthy but because he was rich in wisdom. He knew the definition of "enough." He had already invested in Chester County farmland, preserving it from development, but also preserving it for native vegetation and animals and for his independence and solitude. The remainder of his too short life was given to his true calling: animal rescue and working with dogs. Paul called these dogs "the dyslexic god;" a gift in this world wherein we can truly experience and try to understand the self sacrificial love of God. He worked with a number of shelters over the years, ultimately becoming devoted to Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals, and Main Line Animal Rescue. Through his tireless work and loving devotion, facilities were built and maintained, volunteers and staff were trained and mentored, and countless canines were rescued, rehabbed and placed in forever homes. In the very end, the staff and volunteers at Francisvale became his true family as well. On January 23rd, Paul too, was welcomed into his Forever Home. He fought valiantly, always declaring he would stay alive long enough to benefit from the cure for pancreatic cancer when it was found. The team at Jefferson University Hospital is fondly appreciated-especially Eleanor Vanderclock, NP; Paul Tarantino, RN; and Jonathan Winter and Charles Yeo, MD's.

In addition to the family mentioned earlier, Paul is survived by his nieces, Mila Brehm (Bill), Elizabeth Drewry, Sara Sharp, his nephew, Zachary McCormick; his great nephews, Liam, Alexander Paul, and Eli Brehm, and his great niece, Katie Brehm. He is also survived by many friends including the devoted staff at Francisvale, as well as his beloved rescues, Wobble-dog, Schatzie, and Sleeve. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will be private. Friends may call from 9:30 until time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the church, on Saturday, Feb. 8. In lieu of flowers, please send Milk Bones...oops, we meant donations (!) to Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals, 328 Upper Gulph Road, Radnor, PA 19087; or Main Line Animal Rescue, 1149 Pike Springs Road, Phoenixville, PA 19425. Or maybe, just go spend some time with a dog. For online condolences, please visit Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory, chandlerfuneralhome.com; 302-478-7100.
