He was born in Buckingham County, Virginia in 1864. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1887. He joined the faculty at West Point in 1891 and was a professor of chemistry, mining and geology from 1911 until his retirement. On April 7, 1890, he married Alice Phinney in Newport, Rhode Island. They had one son, Russell Wirt Robinson of West Orange, New Jersey. His son married Mary Gibson, the daughter of Richardson Gibson of New York City, formerly of Lexington, Kentucky and the niece of Mrs. Frederick J.H. Von Engelken of Lexington, Kentucky. His first wife, Alice, died in 1918. In 1920 he married his second wife, Nancy Hinman Henderson, who was the widow of his stepson, Theodore Phinney Henderson, of Chicago, Illinois and was born about 1892 in Kentucky. They were the parents of one daughter, Evelyn Byrd Robinson who was born about 1926 in New York. On October 16, 1928, he retired from the United States Army due to age requirements after 45 years, most of which was at West Point. He became ill in December 1928 and was treated at Walter Reed Hospital, returning to his home in Virginia and then to his home in Washington, D.C. in January 1929. He died at his home in Washington, D.C. of heart failure. After his death his wife, Nancy and daughter Evelyn lived in Washington, D.C. Evelyn later married a Mr. Stewart.
