She was born May 22, 1915, in Chicago, Ill.
She held a bachelor's degree in art and a master's degree in English from Northwestern University in Evansville, Ill.
After completing her education she taught at high schools at Harvey and Monee, Ill., before moving to Seattle in 1940.
She married Richard Speer in Seattle on Sept. 7, 1941. They were divorced in 1958. Speer is president of Cascade Cartridge, Inc.
She is survived by two sons, Gregory Speer, a student at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., and Stephen, a student at Washington State University; and a brother, Chester C. Harms, Belvidere, Ill.
