Elizabeth's husband, Thomas A. Brayton, was a Union soldier.

From the Documents of the Assembly of the State of New York, Volume 7:

"Brayton, Thomas A. -- Age, 36 years. Enlisted, October 19, 1861, at Bangor, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co.D. November 22, 1861; missing in action, October 27, 1864, near Fair Oaks, Va; no further record."

His disappearance/death coincides with the Battle of Fair Oaks & Darbytown, also known as the Second Battle of Fair Oaks. The Second Battle of Fair Oaks was a solid victory for Confederate forces under Maj. General Charles W. Field. Confederate forces, responding to an attack against the Richmond defenses by the forces of Union Maj. General Benjamin Butler, took over 600 prisoners and lost only 100 men to the Union's 1603 casualties.
