Martin was born October 22, 1956 to Leonard and Elizabeth (Hill) Ries in Waterloo, Iowa.

Martin lived in Ames for most of his adult life. He had a thirst for knowledge and loved trains. Martin also loved learning about history and was working on an in-depth research of his family genealogy.

Martin is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Ries of Spencer, Iowa; two brothers, Ronald Ries and Richard Ries, both of from Spencer; and one sister, Linda (Dave) Mell of Spencer.

He is also survived by three nieces, Lorraine Vanderpool, Elizabeth Ries and Rebecca Mell; four nephews, Chad Ries, Ryan Ries, Jacob Ries and Michael Mell; seven great-nieces; and four great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Ries.
