Opal Irene Payne July 21, 1907 Nov. 13, 2005 Our Mom, Opal Irene Payne, 98, departed to join our Pop on November 13, 2005.She was laid next to him in graveside services at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary in Bakersfield on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. Mom was born Opal Irene Ausel, July 21, 1907 to Jacob and Elma Ausel, in Oil City, Pennsylvania.She was preceded on the journey by her Mom and Dad, our Pop, H.L. Jerry Payne; son, Robert L. (Bob) Payne; daughter-in-law, Melba Payne and sister, Ernestine Uren. Those of us here to bask in a wonderful memory of her are son, Thomas L. ( Tommy) Payne; grandchildren, Debi Winrich, John Payne, Jacob Payne, and Joanna Payne; and great-grandchildren, Kris Winrich, Kelly Winrich, Kevin Winrich, Zachary Payne, Sarah Payne, Larry Payne, Sophia Payne and Caroline Payne.Also basking in the great memory are niece, Pat Outlaw and her children, nephew, Gene Alan Uren and wife, Juanita, daughter-in-law, Alice (Fifi) Payne and granddaughters-in-law, Jennifer Payne (Bakersfield) and Jennifer Payne (Denver), and grandson-in-law, Kurt Winrich. Mom moved to California as a little girl. Grandpa Jake came to work for Standard Oil. They first settled in the foothills opposite the bluffs in the oil field town of Oil City.They had groceries and other dry goods delivered by Weills in a wagon from Bakersfield.Mom attended Standard School and graduated from Bakersfield Union High School.Ahead of her time, she drove the family car to high school and later, to work, often carrying many friends and neighbors along with her. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary for Standard Oil. When she married Pop, she moved to Bakersfield.Early in their marriage, Pop worked for Richfield. Later, he owned his own business as a jobber/distributor for Shell Oil Company, and Mom was the bookkeeper until they retired.In addition to raising her children,Bob and Tommy, she participated in the Eastern Star and for many years, volunteered as a Gray Lady at Kern General Hospital.Mom & Pop cherished the many friends and activities they enjoyed, especially the Laf-a-Lot Dance Club.We all will miss her greatly, but we find comfort in knowing she is with Pop and in the many, many great memories we have of our life times together. We want to extend our heart-felt thanks to the staff at Hallmark and Evergreen Arvin for the wonderful care they gave our Mom while she was with them, and the folks from the first Presbyterian Church for the faithful, spiritual care they gave her.
