Irene M. Viola was born in Budapest, Hungary to Bartholomew Viola (1861–?) and Rose Somagy (1870–1946), and according to the 1900 Census, she had two sisters, Paris (2 years her senior) and Elis (3 years her junior). The family immigrated to New York in 1896.

She married three times. Her first marriage was to John Desiderious Von Nagy ("Von Nagy" being his surname), who died in 1915. I have seen his middle name spelled "Desiderious" and "Desidarious". I'm not sure which is correct. Her second marriage was in 1916 to prominent physician, Dr. John William Walsh, Sr. He adopted her two young children, Gladys and John, from her first marriage, and their surnames were changed to "Walsh". John also took his stepfather's middle name, "William". They later had a rather contentious public divorce. Her third marriage was to Dr. Stephen Charles Szalay, which is the surname used on her headstone.
