Gladys was the first born child of Irene Viola (b 1889 Hungary) and John Desiderius von Nagy (1882 Hungary-1915 New York). She had a younger brother John Desiderius von Nagy AKA John W Walsh, MD (1913-2000). After her father's death her mother married Joseph W Walsh, MD, and Galdys was the big sister to Anita E "Nancy" Walsh Bennett (b 1918) and William Bertalan Walsh, MD (1920-1996). At some point in her childhood it appears her stepfather may have adopted Gladys and her brother John, as they used the Walsh name.

In 1933 she married her first husband William Joseph McCullough, a sports writer for the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper. They married in Bellaire, Maryland.

After this marriage ended, she married 2 more times.
