Dorothy was born in St. Paul April 6, 1928 to Alfred and Mildred (Czechovitz) Nelson. She resided in St. Paul until moving with her family to Seattle in 1942 where she finished her education. At the age of 21, Dorothy moved back to St. Paul where she met Arthur Hanson. They were married February 10, 1951.
They raised their family in St. Paul and retired to their lake home in 1979. After moving there, Dorothy was actively involved with the Seven County Senior Federation, the East Central Area on Aging, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Kanabec County Board on Aging, was a board member for the Minnesota Senior Federation, and was appointed by Minnesota Governor Carlson to be the Consumer Advisor for Region 2 of the Minnesota Care Board and an alternate to the white House Conference on Aging. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she continued her volunteer activities.
