Levis was born in Pennsylvania in 1822, and married Mary (Dean) there in 1843. They had 13 children, but only 6 daughters and a son, John L. Pyle lived to maturity.

The family first came to Hand County, South Dakota in 1882. Levis was by training a homeopathic doctor and pharmacist, though his granddaughter, Gladys Pyle, later stated that even the family was somewhat suspect of his expertise. He and his wife became substantial community builders in Miller.

*From the January 3, 1883 issue of the Hand County Press, was recorded a list of Early Businesses Of Miller. Under Drugs, is the following: The "New Departure" drug store is first class and is presided over by Dr. Pyle. Under grocery businesses is this: Dr. L. Pyle also carries a fine stock of groceries, stationery, dry goods, etc. which he sells dirt cheap. The Doctor built the two story building which he occupies for about $1700. Dr. L. Pyle is also listed under Physicians,as of those who administer to our sick, which are imported .

His wife, Mary died in 1889 after a long illness of consumption. Dr. Pyle died in 1896, and both are buried in Miller.

Their son John married Mary Isabella (Shields) May 26, 1886. Three years later they moved to Huron, where John's law business prospered. He died tragically on February 21, 1902.
