Charles served as a Radarman First Class, U.S.S. Bush (DD-529), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Navy of January 12, 1943.

Charles was "Killed In Action" when the U.S.S. Bush was sunk by multiple Japanese kamikazes that hit the ship off Okinawa during the war. He was one of the " 87 " of her crew that were lost in this sinking.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Husband of Gloria Ann Swindell.

He was originally interred in the Okinawa 7th Marine Cemetery on Okinawa and was later repatriated here on February 8, 1949.

The U.S.S. Bush received seven battle stars for her World War II service.
