Evangeline "Vangie" Bell, 92, of Howard formerly of Sioux Falls, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Madison Community Hospital, Madison, South Dakota.

Memorial services will be 2 pm, Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Beach United Methodist Church, Howard, with burial prior to services at 1 pm in Graceland Cemetery, Howard. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 am to 5 pm at Willoughby Funeral Home, Howard.

Evangeline "Vangie" Bell was born October 22, 1920 in Hermiston, Oregon to Ide Carl and Lelah Myrtle (Burwell) Bell. Vangie's mother passed away when she was ten years old. At this time, Vangie and her brother Bill rode a train from Washington to Aberdeen, South Dakota where her relatives, Willis and Elizabeth Berry picked them up to live with them east of Fedora, South Dakota on a farm. Vangie graduated from Fedora High School in 1938 and obtained a teachers certificate from Eastern State Normal School in Madison, South Dakota in 1941. She taught in several schools, on the Indian reservation and Argonne, SD, being her favorite. Vangie was loved by all her students, as many came to visit her when she moved to Howard. She worked for Lincoln National Life Insurance in Sioux Falls, SD, for many years before retiring. In June of 2004, she moved to Whispering Winds Assisted Living, Howard.

Vangie loved her new home and was known to be very sharp answering the daily trivia questions, especially topics on history and the Bible. She was loved by the employees, residents and always had a positive attitude. Vangie was known for all the interesting letters, birthday greetings, and newspaper clippings she mailed daily. She particularly had a talent for making her letters come to life by using many action words to describe her stories. Her many corresponding letters will be missed by the young and old. She kept in contact with many people throughout her life and wrote many letters to those she had connections with that were serving in the military aboard.

Thank full for sharing her life are her sister-in-law: Barbara Bell of Belleville, WI; several nieces, nephews, cousins out of state and her many, many friends. Vangie was preceded in death by two brothers: Bill and Bob and a sister: Lois.
