Mr. Charles Lamar Bridges, Sr., 78, of Connelly Springs, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Frye Regional Medical Center, following a period of declining health.
Charles was born on November 6, 1935 in Burke County to the late Marion Posey Bridges and Mattie Iola Mosteller. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran , serving during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam, during which he was awarded the Bronze Star. During his military service he was stationed stateside in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania and overseas in Turkey, Germany, England and Okinawa. Charles retired as a Senior Master Sergeant after 21 years of service. He returned home after his military career and was employed for 21 more years with Burke County Public Schools as a school bus driver. Mr. Bridges was a longtime and very supportive member of the First Baptist Church of Hildebran, and enjoyed gardening, working on anything mechanical during his free time and enjoyed many hours of fellowship with his friends at the East Burke Senior Citizen Center.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Huffman Bridges of the home, three children, Charles L. Bridges, Jr. and wife Vicki of Middletown, PA, Connie M. Waldrop and husband Bud of Vista, CA, and Carole A. Center and husband Matt of Hickory, one brother, Douglas Bridges and wife Edith of Hildebran, two sisters, Betty Jo Smart of Hildebran and Frances Geer and husband Bob of Columbus, OH. Also surviving are four grandchildren; Steven Charles Bridges, Michael Lamar Bridges, Charlee Marie Waldrop and Triston Matthew Center, one great-granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M at the First Baptist Church of Hildebran.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Hildebran with Rev. Ronald Arndt officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
