Richard's father died when Richard was 3 years old, but he graduated from high school and was a graduate of Purdue University at Lafayette, Indiana. Richard was an educator with a wide teaching experience in five mid-western states. On 27 March 1941, he enlisted in the army and rose through the ranks achieving the rank of Tech-sergeant. Richard married Bernice (Wetrich) Nickell, a special education teacher in the Washington County, Iowa, at Wellman, Washington County, Iowa, on 7 August 1970. During their five-year marriage, the couple lived in Wellman.

During World War II, Richard served as a Tech-Sergeant with the U. S. Army.
