THE HAYNES HOME AT OAK ISLAND

The family of William Arthur and Isabella Prudence (Dees) Haynes settled on Double Bayou in 1874 and made their home in the Oak Island community, an area of the county that has experienced significant growth in recent years. The Haynes family originated in England, settled first on the East Coast, and afterwards made their way to Monroe County, Alabama. William Arthur was born in Alabama in 1827, married to Prudence in 1851 and enlisted in the Third Alabama Infantry Regiment during the War Between the States. Although he died in 1882 at Oak Island, his widow Prudence lived on until 1907. The old Haynes Home, depicted here, was occupied for many years by their son Thomas Howard Haynes (1859-1923) and his wife Melissa Ella Dugat Haynes (1877-1928).
