Tommy L. Caraker, 72, of Herrin, passed away 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Tommy retired as a custodian for Herrin Hospital and Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving from 1958 until 1962.
Tommy was a very artistic and musical man. He played guitar and had a glass engraving and knife making business.
Tommy was born January 30, 1941 in Herrin, IL to Albert Thomas and Dorothy Bernice (Reams) Caraker.
Tommy was united in marriage with Linda Sue Finney on September 15, 1962 in Herrin, IL.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Linda Caraker of Herrin; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Glen and Tracy Caraker of Winter Park, CO; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa Renae and Ken Stone of Herrin, Teresa Jo and Kerry Braswell of Makanda; seven grandchildren, Shauna Lynn (Rocco) Ferrante, Kristen Nicole Caraker, Scott Allen (Melissa) Deming, Jr., Melissa Sue Dunmyer, Maribeth (Vertice) Holzer, Colton James Braswell and Cheyenne Nicole Braswell; three great grandchildren, Donavyn Gregory Deming, McKenna Renae Dunmyer, Hunter Jaymes Lee Dunmyer and a great granddaughter, Zoe Jade Ferrante due in March of 2014; brother, John Loren Caraker of Sparta and nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Opal June Bowen.
Services will be 11:00 Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Michael Tetmeyer officiating. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
