His wife, Martha Hamm Peters, was the first woman in New Brunswick's normal schools. His daughter was Mabel P. Peters, who founded the Canadian Playgrounds Association. According to Dr. Elizabeth McGahan's entry for his wife in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, in 1856 she effectively retired from the teaching profession when she married a cousin of Samuel Leonard Tilley, Alexander Nevers Peters. Their grave marker is unique in Fernhill in that it was carved into a boulder.

Although he was not as famous as his wife and daughter, he had successful and varied careers. He was a retail grocer when he married and later he became the successful proprietor of one of Saint John's well-known hotels, the Clifton House. He started as a newspaper manager.
