Martha Hamm Peters was the first woman in New Brunswick's normal schools. Her daughter was Mabel P. Peters, who founded the Canadian Playgrounds Association. According to Dr. Elizabeth McGahan's entry for her in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, in 1856 she effectively retired from the teaching profession when she married a cousin of Samuel Leonard Tilley, Alexander Nevers Peters. Their grave marker is unique in Fernhill in that it was carved into a boulder.
