Augusta was the granddaughter of William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio. Her grandfather Hugh died in 1845 in a cholera epidemic in Brown County, Ohio.

Augusta's parents and maternal grandmother relocated from Brown County, Ohio to Douglas County, Kansas in 1855 in an area called Kennedy Valley on the Wakarusa River. They traveled in a group of about twenty-five Kennedy relatives.
