Elizabeth E. "Betty" Reynolds Smulik, 88, a resident of Dufford Terrace, passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, surrounded by her family at her residence following a lengthy illness. A resident of the Erie area all of her life she was born in Erie on December 27, 1925, a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah Cole Reynolds.


Betty originally worked as an inventory clerk with Continental Rubber and went on to work at Marathon Electric and Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center. Most recently she worked as a payroll clerk with the Hammermill Paper Co. for many years before retiring in 1991. She was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church and loved her church family. She was a frequent contributor to the Erie Times-News and her comments were often published. She enjoyed traveling and visiting family.


In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Smulik; three sisters, Elaine Billings, Martha Pike, and Carol Hansen; and three brothers, Charles, Milton, and Rev. Gary Reynolds.


Survivors include one sister, Kathleen Conner of Titusville, Pa.; a step-son, Michael J. Smulick and his wife, Melodie of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Reynolds Hill and her husband, Earl of Erie; many nieces and nephews including, Susan Reynolds Hoag and her husband, Albert of Erie; great-nieces and nephews including, Lisa and Kelly Hoag who had the honor of caring for Betty in recent years; her grandchildren, Tina Smulick Ferraro and her husband, Tony and Janelise Smulick Erickson and her husband, Donald; and several great-grandchildren.


Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to services there on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will follow in Erie County Memorial Gardens.


Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 3952 Pine Ave., Erie, PA 16504.
