DIXON, Neb. -- Phyllis Herfel, 89, of Dixon died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Neb.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Evangelical Free Church in Concord, Neb., with the Rev. Todd Thelen officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery, Allen, Neb. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Schumacher-Hasemann Funeral Home in Laurel, Neb.

Phyllis E. Herfel, the daughter of William and Annie (Nelson) Bishop, was born Jan. 19, 1916, in rural Maskell, Neb. She attended country school at Turkey Creek in rural Newcastle, Neb.

She married Wilmer Herfel on April 9, 1934, in the Maskell Lutheran parsonage. The couple lived in the Maskell and Dixon area all of their lives. She was a cook at Maskell School and Wayne State College for 11 years. She was later employed as an officer in charge of the Dixon Post Office until her retirement.

She was a member of Evangelical Free Church. She loved her Lord and family. She enjoyed church activities, Bible study, making lefsa and her famous sugar cookies.

Survivors include two sons, Lamont (Sue) and Larry; two daughters, Vonda (Robert) and Bonnie (Dale); 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a great-stepgranddaughter; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Wilmer; three brothers, Lamont, Levi and Virgil; a sister-in-law, Doris Bishop; a daughter-in-law, Jean Herfel; a grandson, Clinton Dempster; and a granddaughter, Lou Ann Herfel.
