J. H. Stanley Dies Suddenly
Following an illness of about one week, J. H. Stanley, prominent Calgary business man, died late on Sunday night. Mr. Stanley was quite ill about a year ago and his illness compelled him to sell out his interest in the Stanley Paper Company, of which he was the founder and he went into retirement. His recovery at that time was slow but successful. About a week ago, however, he was stricken with symptoms of his former malady. His death was attributed to an attack of heart failure. He is survived by his wife and one son, George.
Mr. Stanley was a native of Chesley, Ontario, and he received his education there. For several years he was connected in business with the J. C. Wilson Paper Company, of Lachute, Quebec. He came to Calgary about 30 years ago, and in 1911 went into the paper business with the firm of Palmer, Edgar & Stanley. In 1912 he went into business for himself, founding the J. H. Stanley Paper Company, which he managed until last year, when his failing health compelled him to sell his interests.
For several months Mr. Stanley was quite ill, the cause being the hardening of the arteries around his heart. He recovered, however, and it was considered that he was out of danger until the recent attack occurred.
Active Club Member
Mr. Stanley was an active member of Perfection Masonic Lodge, and he was the first assistant Rabban of Al Azhar Temple shrine, which was organized in 1907. He also held this office in 1908 and 1909. He was treasurer of the Canadian club for a number of seasons, and was one of the leading members of the Rotary club, of which, upon his retirement from business, he was made an honorary member. He was also actively interested in the work of the Board of Trade.
Perfection Lodge, A.F. & A.M., will take take charge of the funeral service, which will be held at the Pro-Cathedral of the Redeemer on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. Mr. McQueen will conduct the service.
