Elizabeth Ann was born at 7 Tram Road Side North Merthyr on certified birth record from Somerset House, London, England. She took the name of Davis (English spelling) or Davies (Welsh spelling) of her stepfather, Thomas Davis, to whom she was sealed to in the temple during her life.

Although her headstone has a different date, Elizabeth Ann's birthdate of April 5, 1868 is on her certified birth record from Somerset House, London, England and was in the possession of her daughter, Delila Gardner Williams. She was officially born in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, South Wales.

Her father, Frederick Edwards, later took the name of his stepfather, Thomas. This was according to Mrs. W.F. Jensen of Logan, Utah, his daughter.

There is much discrepancy in her name and this is the story told to me by Marilyn Grua, daughter of Delila Gardner Williams in an 2012 email: "I'm looking at the birth certificate for "Elizabeth Ann, daughter of Frederick Thomas and Margaret Thomas formerly Rees, reported by the mother Margaret Thomas by her mark." Elizabeth Ann is listed as born on the fifth of April 1868 at 7 Tram Road Side North, Sub District of Lower Merthyr Tydfil in the county of Glamorgan. Her birth was registered on the 16 May1868. The story of his last name listed as Edwards-Thomas is the following. His grandfather was Thomas Edwards, and he admired him, so he often went by his name. He listed his name in the 1851 census as Frederick Edwards in Wales with his first wife Susannah. After he came to the United States, he was listed in the 1880 census in Logan, Cache, Utah census as Frederick Edwards with two of his children who came over with their father. A woman who descended from his line named Dolline Jeppson wrote to Grandma Williams. I have her letters; the main message of those letters is that Frederick was using both Edwards and Thomas interchangebly so often, that it became confusing to find his name accurately. I think that Grandma, Dolline, and Grandma's sisters felt that they needed to list both of his last names to be able to include all of his records.

In 1851 census: Frederick Edwards listed as 31= year of birth 1820
In 1861 census: Frederick Edwards listed as 39= year of birth 1828
In 1868 marriage record with Margaret, Frederick Thomas is listed as 38=year of birth 1830
In 1874 ship record, Frederick's age listed as 46 (Frederick Thomas) = year of birth 1828
I have all of the above documents.

As far as legality: in the late 1800s, name changes many times were not done legally, as money was scarce for most people. Annie's name started ending with Davies soon after Surveyor Davies came into her life as the stepfather. Annie's younger brothers, Reece and Phillip both took on the name of Davies. Nothing legal about it; just what they did. On a laminated family group sheet, my Mother Delila writes: "Margaret R. Thomas and Thomas Davis were endowed and sealed in Manti Temple on 5 Mar 1890 (living for both). Elizabeth Ann Sealed 24 Feb 1939 during her life. The sealings of Rees and Phillip (her full-blood brothers) were done 19 Sep 1950 with their written consent before they died." In Annie's marriage document in the SL Temple to Neal L Gardner, I think that she is listed as Annie Davies. In pictures that were labeled before she was married, she lists herself as Annie Davies. She wanted nothing to do with Frederick.

Changes were made whenever people decided to be identified with another name. Legal documentation was not necessarily done in this era. The tombstones of her two brothers list their names as Reece Davies and Phillip Davies. Their descendents go by Davies; one of Philip's granddaughters was in my class in school.

The presence of two last names is not uncommon in Wales. Patronymics was present and modern name patterns were also present. (Welsh research is considered to be one of the most difficult kinds in modern times.) The two name patterns often overlapped, so it became difficult but not impossible to identify a person. Patronymically, Frederick should have taken his Father's first name of Evan, thus being Thomas Evan or Evans. Modern naming patterns would make him Frederick Thomas. The Edwards really doesn't have a place in these patterns."

Annie and Neil Livingston Gardner are the parents of Vernon Neil Gardner, Gwen Gardner, Regina Gardner, Veda Margaret Gardner, Gladys Gardner, Delila Gardner and Margaret Davis (Marguerite) Gardner.
