Marie grew up in the Lutheran faith and attended the Zion parochial school through the 8th grade. In 1911 her family re-located to Covington, Oklahoma. She had been school-mates with Herman Bartels, and four years after she left Nebraska he went to Oklahoma to make her his bride. They returned to Saline County, Nebraska where they lived until Herman's death.
They had four children:
Victor Fred (1916-2012)
Gertrude (1917-1918)
Mildred (1919-2003) and
Eldo (1922-2004).
Their three surviving children had moved to Storm Lake, Iowa and Maria and Herman were making plans to move there also when he was killed in an automobile wreck in 1948. Following his death, Maria joined her children in Storm Lake.
