Simon was born in Quincy, Illinois, son of Heinrich Kanngiesser and Gertrude Wedenbauer, and one of a family of 6 boys and 3 girls. The Kanngiesser family later moved to Wien, Missouri to farm.
Simon married Katie Sarbaum in 1890, who was also living near Wien, Missouri. They moved to Alberta about 1900 to homestead in the Fairview district, near Lacombe.

After a long illness, Simon Kanngiesser, one of our best known farmers, died at his home in Lacombe on July 4th, aged 55 years and 6 months. The funeral was held on Saturday, the service being held in the Catholic Church, and was attended by a very large number of friends of the family.
Deceased leaves to mourn his demise, his wife, six sons and two daughters. Sim, the eldest sons, is a soldier at Sarcee, Joseph and Isadore are in the artillery at Petawawa, Fred, John, Richard, Louise and Gertrude, are at home. The sympathy of their many friends is extended to the bereaved family.
