SHEPHERD E. ELLIS.

The death of Shepherd E. Ellis, briefly noted In Monday's Evening Republican, removed from earth one of the best known citizens of Crawford county. He was born in Mead township, Nov. 16, 1823, and was the third son of John and Elizabeth Sackett Ellis, natives of Massachusetts and of English ancestry, who came to Crawford County in early days. John Ellis was one of nature's noblemen, and his wife was an estimable woman. Their family of six children were sons and daughters of which their parents had just reason to feel proud. The subject of our sketch chose farming and dairying as his life vocation, and was successful in all his undertakings. His large farm on the Ellis road, just east of the city limits, is a valuable property. Shepherd E. Ellis was a whole-souled, Christian man, and was esteemed by his neighbors and friends. Without ever asking for political preferment, he was placed In positions of trust, and all the duties committed to his hands were always faithfully performed. Politically he was a Democrat, but free from undue party bias toward those of his neighbors of a different political belief. He was a faithful and consistent member of Christ P. E. Church, and while a man who was never ostentatious nor burdened with pride, he was an humble follower of the Master and practiced the precepts of pure and undefined religion. His first wife was Miss Frances A. Fry, a native of Massachusetts, and she was the mother of seven children, four of whom--Albert F., Henry W., Cora and Nellie M., wife of Dr. H. C. Carroll survive. The mother died in the autumn of 1873. Mr. Ellis' second wife was Amelia, daughter of Dr. Palmer, of New York City. She survives to mourn the loss of a devoted husband.

The funeral services will be held at the family residence at 1:30 p. m. Thursday, Dec. 26, Rev. Rogers Israel officiating. The remains will be interred in Greendale cemetery.

------
Based on other records, his other two children who did not survive him were Arthur and Frank.
