Birth date uncertain is from "American Descendants in the Male Line of Thomas Taylor 1628-12682 of Worthenbury, Flintshire, Wales" by Richard Edward Taylor. Son of Simeon Taylor (1704-1774) and Esther Dicks/Dix (1710 Birmingham, Chester, Pennsylvania - Oct 8, 1794 Guilford County, North Carolina).

The family came from a long line of Quakers. John's paternal grandparents were Thomas Taylor Jr (born Jul 4, 1675 Wales - died Jun 10, 1709 Dorchester County, Maryland) and Rachel (Minshall) Taylor (b. April 30, 1679 Budworth, Cheshire, England - d. July 22, 1762 Nottingham, Chester, Pennsylvania) - per research by Troy Taylor and Dr. Richard Taylor.

About July 1768, John married Mary "Polly" Lewis (estimated date based on him being dismissed from the New Garden, NC Monthly Meeting for marrying out of unity "MOU" on Sept 24, 1768).

About 1781, John joined Capt Enoch Osborne's militia.

About 1795, John moved to the area now known as Ashe County, NC. Ashe County was officially created in 1799 as part of North Carolina. In the 1780s, the area now known as Ashe County was part of the short-lived State of Franklin. John ran a grist mill on Elk Creek in Ashe County (now in Alleghany County, NC). the site is visible from the Bethany Methodist Church is Grayson County, VA.

John died after July 21, 1807 when he bought a tract of land (40 acres) on the New River from William Perry, witnessed by Cornelius Vanover. According to the Alleghany County Heritage book, John's will was probated in August 1807 in Ashe County, NC by Cornelius Vanover, however, a copy of the will has not been preserved.

1. Simeon Taylor (abt 1768 - 1824 Grayson County, Virginia); married (1) Unknown, (2) Patsy Osborne
2. Stephen Taylor Sr. (June 9, 1770 Wilkes County, North Carolina - September 2, 1849 Tumbling Creek, Washington County, Virginia); married Sarah Roark.
3. John Taylor Jr (abt 1772 - died some time after making his will with his wife on 25 Sep 1854 in Ashe County, North Carolina); married Martha "Patsy" Martha Long. Died in Ashe County, North Caroline (John's father and Patsy's father were neighbors per Johnny Long).
4. William Taylor (abt 1775 Virginia - after Oct 17, 1823 when he made his will in Alleghany County, North Carolina); married Mary Vanover.
