Gene was married to Jennie CHAMPION (1912-1998). She was a 1935 graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. Jennie's parents were Dr. William Leon CHAMPION (1869-1955) and Sue Lou HARWELL (1875-1955) who was also a graduate of Agnes Scott College.

Gene and Jennie lived in Florida for several years while Gene was in the Army where he attained the rank of Captain.

They had two known children, a son (Gene, Jr., b. c1941) named for his father and a daughter (Leona, b. c1943), named for her maternal grandfather.

After an honorable discharge from the Army, Gene spent several years in private practice, some of which were with his father-in-law. For several years after that, he was a professor at Emory University where Gene had done his undergraduate studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory in 1930.
