Another member of the Greatest Generation went to be with the Lord on December 10, 2013. Born in the Philippines in 1924, Jerry was a guerrilla fighter in WWII. In1944, he and four other Filipino guerrillas were recruited by the US Navy to serve as translators aboard submarines that were supplying arms to guerrilla units. He continued serving in the Navy's submarine service for the next 20 years. From diesel boats to sub tenders to nuclear powered ballistic missile submarines [he was on the "plank crew" of the USS Alexander Hamilton (USSBN-617)] , Jerry rose through the ranks retiring as Senior Chief Petty Officer (E7) in 1965.
Jerry married his first wife, Doris, in 1949. In addition to his three stepchildren, Charlie, Judy and Bobby Inot, Jerry and Doris had a daughter, Brenda (who died in infancy) and two sons, Daniel and Richard. When Jerry was away on WESTPAC or moonlighting at MacDonald's, Doris kept the family together. This Navy family moved frequently during Jerry's career...San Diego to Great Lakes, IL to Groton, CN to Charleston, SC to San Diego. Bobby recalls going to a different school every year from 6th to 12th grade. After many moves, many miles and many friends, Jerry and Doris returned in 1965 to their home that they had bought in 1958 on Armstrong St in San Diego. For his next career, Jerry did something he was extremely knowledgeable in, he cooked for the Navy, only this time as a civilian heading up the galley at the 32nd Street Naval Base for the next 20 years. One has to marvel at the number of meals Jerry has plan and prepared, and the number of mouths fed.
With the children marrying, graduating from college and serving in the military, Jerry and Doris hit the road on many RV adventures seeing the country and visiting family and old friends. Often times they would travel to see their grandson, Paul, playing in soccer tournaments. The two highlights on the Grant calendar each year were the family picnics (anyone who knew them was "family") at Mission Bay Park and the Christmas Eve gatherings at their home. Doris passed away in 1992
Jerry met Josefina and they were married in 2006. They were active in their church, the National City United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and visiting the sick. Jerry and Josie also traveled in the RV and camped with groups. Jerry was much loved by Josie's family, children and grandchildren alike. He will be missed by them all.
Of all his accomplishments, the one Jerry may have been most proudest of was his membership and service in the Masons. He joined the Masons in 1963 while stationed in North Chicago, IL, and for the next 50 years rose through the numerous degrees of Masonry. In 1992, he was the Master of the East San Diego Lodge #561. In October, 2013, he was recognized and honored for his 50 years of membership in a special ceremony at his lodge. The smile on his face reflected his pride upon accomplishing this great achievement.

From humble beginnings to the very end of his life, he did what many others from his generation did, through hard work, loyal service and compassion he made his contribution to our country's defense, worked hard to make our country prosperous and reached out a hand when needed to lift up others.
