LLOYD E. HOWARD SR., 85, of Douglass, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, December 31, 2013 at the Robert J. Dole VA Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

Born on May 8, 1928 in Mulvane, Kansas, he was the son of Fred and Ethel (Wheeler)Howard. He received his education in Douglass. A veteran of World War II., Mr. Howard proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Fireman First Class. Following his honorable discharge in November 1947, Lloyd moved to Detroit, Michigan. He was employed for Ford Automobile. He returned to Douglass in the late 1940's and was a part of the Highway 77 construction.

In 1951, he moved to the Minor Ranch and was later introduced to his future wife Vera Louise Warmbrodt by his sisters. They became life partners and were united in marriage on February 16, 1954 in Winfield. They made their home on a farm north of Douglass, Kansas where they farmed and raised their family. They spent the past 28 years wintering in Donna, Texas at the Victoria Palms Resort. The couple traveled across the US, Canada and Mexico and to Alaska when they were 75. Vera preceded him in death on September 17, 2012.

He was a member of the Douglass United Methodist Church. Lloyd loved dancing, entertaining and traveling while Vera was alive. He also enjoyed woodcarving.

His family includes: His sons: Richard Howard of Rockport, TX; and Ronald Howard and wife Nancy of Douglass, KS; His daughter: Deborah DeHoff and husband Kenneth of Douglass, KS; His sisters: Cat Meyer and husband Jack of Rock, KS; and Ann Tabor and husband Ray of Clearwater, FL; His 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son Lloyd Jr. (Buster) Howard; his brothers, Raymond and Paul Howard; and his sisters, Pauline Houser, Edna Maness, Mildred Maddox and Jane Carr.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Military committal honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

Memorials have been established in Lloyd's name for the DAV and the American Red Cross. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
