John (Jack) Law, the son of Glen and Hilda Law, was born June 23, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa. Jack went to grade school at the country school a mile south of the family farm and graduated from Pierson High School. He enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Seabee (Can Do) in World War II in the Pacific theater. During this time he was stationed on Guam and Saipan. After being honorably discharged from the military, Jack returned to the family farm near Pierson.
Jack attended Morningside College in Sioux City. While there he met Darlene McPherson, and on April 5, 1952, they were united in marriage. They began farming first outside Pierson and then near Anthon before settling back on the family farm outside Pierson in 1971.
Jack was active in and served on the boards of Salem Lutheran Church, the Pierson COOP, the United States Ploughing Organization, and the Iowa Plowing Association. In 1981 he won a National Champion Antique Plowing contest in Pennsylvania driving a 1936 Model A John Deere on steel and pulling a hand trip John Deere plow.
For many years Jack contributed to the column "Ask Mr. Thinker" in the Green Magazine, where he answered questions from around the world regarding the repair and restoration of two-cylinder John Deere tractors.
Jack helped clear the land for the Pierson golf course and played many rounds there in men's league and with his family. His basketball team was inducted into the Morningside College Hall of Fame for its success.
Jack enjoyed the Pierson area, his farm, and his antique tractors. After he retired from farming, he remained on the family farm for many years. He left the farm to move to Marion, Iowa, where he regularly beat his sons at cribbage. Jack was tall, quiet, and always ready to help out. His full-size Model A John Deere tractor on steel wheels served as a mailbox, a local landmark, and was featured on national television. He will be missed.
His family includes son David and wife Jill of Marion, son Tom and wife Lori of Marion, and son Jim and wife Theresa of Shorewood, Minnesota. Jack has five grandchildren: Stephanie, William, Colby, Amy, and Kayley. He is also survived by his sister, Lois Frett.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene; and his brothers, Paul and Don.
