Jennie Skurdalsvold, 89, died Saturday 8 Nov 1986, at the Augustana Home in south Minneapolis.

The Augustana Home -- at 1007 E 14th St. Minneapolis, MN 55404 -- is in the very neighborhood of -- and one mile way from -- the Skurdalsvold Family home where Jennie was born and grew up : 919 21st Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55404

Jennie was a voice teacher at Augsburg College in Minneapolis; St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn; and the former Richfield School of Music in Richfield. (Richfield is a community in the southern Minneapolis, near the Mall of America, the Twin Cities airport, and Fort Snelling National Cemetery -- burial place of Jennie's older brother, Peter Skurdalsvold.)

Jennie was a choir director at several area churches, including Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Richfield, and the former Trinity Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

Jennie Skurdalsvold sang at many speclal events such as Norway Day at Minnehaha Park and performances of Handel's "Messiah" at the Minneapolis Auditorium.

"She was a contralto and had a fantastic volce," said her nephew, John G. Skurdalsvold of Mora, Minnesota. "It probably wouldn't have been any good for rock 'n' roll but, for the kind of music she sang, it was very sweet. She sang religious songs in Norwegian and English."

In the 1950s, Skurdalsvold also assisted at Sheltering Arms, a Minneapolis day school for developmentally challenged children -- which closed in 1983. "She taught them theme songs," her nephew said, "and the children remembered them. The people there were quite surprised."

Skurdalsvold was a frequent soloist at weddings and funerals and, on Sunday evenings, at the Marie Sandvik Center, a mission chapel for transients.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Augustana Home, 1007 E 14th St.

Memorials may be sent to the Marie Sandvik Center.
