He was a musicologist and archivist paléography at the École Nationale des Chartes, who gave a new impetus to the medieval research. He taught at the Catholic University and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Sociales. From 1897 to 1904 he contributed to the Tribune de Saint-Gervais, newspaper Schola Cantorum. He also graduated in Armenian language and began a journey through Central Asia, after which he published several articles on the Armenian Church and the music in Turkestan. He published articles on medieval music, minstrels and troubadours. Inside the chapel, a long epitaph recounts his career which is contained a bronze medallion also.
