Obituary from The Times-News (Twin Falls, ID) - Thursday, February 8, 2001:
Jane Maria Prescott Hashman, 90-year-old Wendell resident, died Monday, February 5, 2001 at the Magic Valley Manor in Wendell. When Dr. Peterson called one of his sons to tell him Grama Jane had passed away, he concluded with: "It's the end of an era."
Jane was born on October 20, 1910 in Smithfield, Cache County, Utah, the daughter of Byrum Heber (Bide) and Maria (Rie) Smith Prescott. She grew up in Cleveland, Idaho until her father moved them to Wendell in 1925.
Jane remembered: "I was 14 when we arrived on the Portland Rose at Gooding, the first time we'd been on a train. I'll never forget the narrow gravel road between Gooding and Wendell with sage brush on each side and the many grey rabbits running across. The Gentile Valley was between two mountain ranges covered with evergreens and the Bear River running between. This desert was quite a contrast but we soon loved the marvels of Magic Valley - Thousand Springs, Niagra Springs, Shoshone ice caves, balanced rock, and many others."
Jane graduated from Wendell High School in 1928. After graduating from the Greg Business College of Twin Falls she worked for the bursar (treasurer) of Albion State School as an accountant.
She married Raymond O. Peterson on June 18, 1931, in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived most of their lives in Wendell with one year in Hailey and one year in Pocatello.
She was very active in the LDS Church, holding many positions, including a Relief Society President, choir director, and gospel doctrine teacher. Many Wendell girls remembered her as an outstanding beehive leader. Jane and Ray served a stake mission in Wendell.
She was very involved in the Republican Party, holding county and state positions on the committee and running for mayor of Wendell in the 1960s. She voted in every election from the time she was old enough to vote and also worked many years on the election board. She helped organize the first PTA in Wendell. She wrote and helped direct the pageant honoring the 50-year celebration of Wendell in 1959.
She was clerk of the Wendell School Board for 20 years and chairman of the Gooding County March of Dimes for 16 years. For 35 years she taught many Red Cross first aid classes in every town from Hailey south to Orchard Valley. She was an accountant for Gates Brothers, Jerry Williams, and the Wendell National Bank before opening a public accounting business which she operated for 40 years in her home office that her husband, Ray, built for her.
Her husband, Ray, died on February 17, 1970 and she married Laurence Hashman on February 10, 1973. He died November 3, 1997.
In 1976-77 Jane and Laurence served in the LDS South Dakota Rapid City Agriculture Mission working with the Sioux Indians on Standing Rock Indian Reservation at Ft. Yates by the Missouri River. When they returned, Jane learned how to use a compute and devoted much time to genealogy work, submitting over a thousand names for temple work in one year.
She is survived by her children, Phyllis Gay )Dale) Bunn of Wendell, Idaho; Walter Ray (Eileen) Petersen of Burley Idaho; and Dale Clifford Petersen of Las Vegas, Nevada; two brothers, W. Dean (Betty Hutson) Prescott of Hammett, Idaho, and Tom (Marge DeLoss) Prescott of Jerome, Idaho; one sister, Tess (Austin) Julian of Ogden, Utah; 32 grandchildren; 49 great -grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; three brothers, Byrum, John, and Heber Prescott; one daughter, Jane LaVon "Bonnie" Peterson Smith Degler; one daughter-in-law, Vicki (Saari) Petersen, and two great-grandsons.
The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2001 at the Wendell Stake Center, with Bishop Phillip Wert officiating. Interment will follow at the Wendell Cemetery.
