"The only name given by the older family members for their grandfather was "HENRY HEMPHILL". Some cousins speculated back in the 1970s and wondered if his name
could have been " William" Henry Hemphill.--But that was only an assumption and not a proven fact. The ONLY reference that this contributor has seen in McMinn County (Tennessee) referred to a "Henry" Hemphill.---which was a reference/notation in the county records
concerning an Henry Hemphill immigrating in 1840. (So until I find a record that states William Henry, I will use the only name his children and grandchildren
used and that is HENRY HEMPHILL.-----

There is no factual or verifiable information concerning Henry Hemphill. It is assumed that he married Elizabeth Long who was a recently widowed with children
ca 1829-30. Their first child was Martha Ann Hemphill who was born in 1833. So it would be my assumption that they married at least by 1831. No record of marriage or divorce has ever been located in McMinn and surrounding areas has ever been located. Henry Hemphill was only in the picture long enough to father four children. Those children are Martha Ann Hemphill, Henderson Pierson Hemphill, Marshall Henry Hemphill, and Lyddia Izabelle Hemphill(who was born
1839). --So it is not known if Henry "abandoned" his family and left the area or if he died. (The family lore/legends are that he went to England and died
there in the mid-to-late 1880s.)---There was a large cluster of Hemphill families that lived in the northern counties of Georgia. Some records give Murray County, Georgia as the birthplace of Marshall Henry Hemphill. ----There were also Addison families who lived in that vicinity who had previously lived in McMinn County, Tennessee.
So we do not know exactly the date or place of Elizabeth's third and last marriage to "General" Andrew Jackson Addison. It could have been McMinn Co., Tenn., or in the area of Murray county, Georgia. (Their first son was born in Whitfield County, Georgia in 1844 and they had four other children, the last born in 1854.
The bond between Elizabeth and her "Hemphill" children was pretty strong.
Elizabeth and General Addison separated/divorced in McDonald County, Missouri in 1877 at which time she moved to be near her sons Marshall and Henderson Hemphill
and daughter Martha Ann (Hemphill) Marshall. These families lived in the area where Boone/Marion/Searcy Counties (Arkansas) cornered. The fourth Hemphill
child, Lyydia had married and had removed to Missouri and later Oklahoma. Elizabeth Long Hemphill Addison died 21 February 1891 at the home of her daughter Martha Ann Marshall near Everton, Boone County, and was buried in
nearby Crawford Cemetery.
The Addison children remained in McDonald Co., Mo. with some going to Texas and Oklahoma. General also went to Texas for a few years but returned to McDonald
County where he died in 1905."

Documented children from the marriage are MARTHA ANN HEMPHILL, MARSHALL HENRY HEMPHILL, HENDERSON PIERSON HEMPHILL, and LYDDIA IZABELLE HEMPHILL.
