Birchdale Past & Present, Indus on Rainy River: Jess Sonderman was the son of Henry Sonderman & Lena Ida Mai. He was one of 9 children. His siblings were Henry, Jr., Alvin, Emma, Mae, Richard, Herta, George, & Grace. Jess grew up & went to school in the Indus area.

Jess' father died in 1913 when Jess was almost 12. His baby sister, Grace, was only 2 weeks old. Life was difficult as Lena raised & supported the children. Her father, Karl Mai, moved to Indus from Wisconsin to help.

Jess married Violet "Mayme" Meyers in 1933 & they had one daughter, Marcia Jean. At first they had a dairy farm in the Manitou/Birchdale area. In the 1940 census, he was hauling cream for area farmers.

In 1944, Jess & Mayme bought the Emil Ruberg store in Birchdale. In 1948, they sold the store in Birchdale & moved to Warroad, MN where they bought & ran the Warroad General Store. They were in Warroad for many years.

Upon his death, Jess was interred in the Indus Cemetery.
