A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the state age of twenty-two in Lancaster September 6, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. B, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Sometime around May 1862, he was hospitalized in Nashville, Tennesse, and never returned to duty with the regiment. On August 1, 1864, he was transferred to 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps where he listed serving in several organizations but ultimately the 12th Company. His compiled military service records are filed under "Henry M. Black" and do not contain a discharge date, although sometime during September or October 1864 is likely.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five in Lancaster April 11, 1865, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. H, 7th U.S. Veteran Volunteers. He spent much of his time on detached duties and honorably discharged at term's end April 11, 1866, at Baltimore, Maryland.
His obituaries in the Lancaster News-Journal and the Lancaster Intelligencer erroneously claim he served with Co. D, 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves (31st Pennsylvania Infantry).
He married Mary Wertz and fathered Atlee W. (b. 10/21/68) and John Mathew (b. 11/16/71). He died at his home from "paralysis of heart" caused by "heat prostration & apoplexy (cerebral)."
