A native of Bakers Mountain in the foothills of North Carolina, Dan was enlisted in the US Marine Corps and retired after 20 honorable years serving the country he loved. After traveling all over the world with the Marine Corps, Dan earned 3 Bronze Stars, Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, and many other service medals and awards. Upon retiring from the USMC, Dan earned his Masters Degree in Human Resources and worked in civil service at Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). Upon retirement from NAVAIR, Dan landed at MCAS Cherry Point.
In his spare time, Dan played guitar, eclectic bass, and then "doghouse" (bull) bass. He played for the Bridgewater Band, and later joined "The Kings Court", and "Carolina Blu". He was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, VFW, Gideons, American Legion, and the Marine Corps League.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Dr. Scott Gleason officiating. A private burial service for the family will be held at a later date at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC.
Dan is survived by his wife Janice of 54 years; his son, Daniel Dean Stevens of New Bern, NC; daughter, Teresa Ann Parker, and husband Roger, of Jacksonville, NC; grandsons, Sean, Brandon, and Joshua and his wife Krissy; and his great grandsons, Myles, Brady, and Blake.
