Named for an uncle who had been a heroic pilot in World War I (also buried at Arlington National Cemetery). Commissioned in the infantry, he fought in World War II in Europe with the 79th Division. One of the first to win the Silver Star, as well as the Purple Heart, among his January 1943 classmates at the United States Military Academy. Also the recipient of the Bronze Star with cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, commendation Medal aand the French Croix de Guerre with Palm.

Also served during the Korean conflict with the 17th Infantry.
