Ray served as a Staff Sergeant, 369th Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Essex County, Vermont prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 4, 1941, prior to the war, in Rutland, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in construction and also as Single, without dependents.

Ray was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart. He may have also been awarded an Air Medal.

Sgt Ray E. Buckminster, left waist gunner of the B-17F 41-24478, took off from Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over St Nazaire's submarine pens. Over the target area it was attacked by heavy flak and enemy fighters, forcing a lucky few crew members to bail out before the plane exploded in mid-air.
