Ella Parshall Stevens, 91, of Paoli, died on Dec. 17, 2013, at Neighborhood Health Hospice.
She was the widow of the late Emil L ("Steve") Stevens who passed away Dec. 26, 1999.
Born in Uniontown, Pa., Ella was the daughter of James M. Parshall and Blanche Baker.
She was a wonderful artist, mother and homemaker, who loved people. She received a B.A. Degree, Art Major from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida, and was a prolific artist who worked in oils, watercolor, silk dyes, collage, mixed media, sculpture and even welding. Her perception of art was best stated "Paintings do not need explanation, nor titles. They exist in their own space ... outside of time ... To be seen ... to be studied and perceived. The subconscious, intuitive thought process, planned ideas, all human experience and the psychological bent of the artist, all added up to the completion of the whole during the creative act." While her initials were EPS her license plate was ESP-ART.
Her awards include John Tiedke Gold Medal, Rollins College, Winter Park Florida; Purchase-Prize Award in North-South Carolina Competition, Spring Mills, S.C.; Margaret Christy Award Wayne Art Center, Wayne Pa.; Chester County Art Assoc. Awards, West Chester, Pa.; Philadelphia Sketch Club Bronze Medal; Oil Awards, Institute for Public Education, Springfield, Pa.
She illustrated four volumes of poetry; Art Life for Guild of Charlotte Artists, National League of Penwomens' Newsletter; Whitford Country Club Cookbook.
She was invited to exhibit with American Album in Kenya with the Women's Peace Conference 1986 which is now at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D. C.
Ella's art was exhibited at Mint Museum, Charlotte, N.C.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Wilmington, Del.; Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster; Eastern College, St. Davids, Pa.; Woodmere Art Gallery, Philadelphia; Haddonfield, N.J; The Plastic Club, Philadelphia; Folly Gallery, Whitford, Pa.; The Tropical Gallery, Naples, Fla.; Tennis in Art Show, Fidelity Bank, Philadelphia; Gallery 72', Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Immaculata College, Yellow Springs Annual.
Her art is included in the following collections: Toby Royston, Whitford, Pa.; Sam Kresson Collection, Philadelphia; Ford Times Magazine, Dearborn, Michigan; Paoli Memorial Hospital; Eastern College, St. Davids Pa.; Philadelphia Public Ledger Building; Southco Inc. Concordville, Pa.; Brandywine Racket Club, Wilmington, Del.
Art memberships include The National League of American Penwomen; Wayne Art Center; Woodmere Art Gallery; Chester County Art Association; Main Line Center for the Arts; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Artist Equity, Philadelphia, Pa; Philadelphia Watercolor Club.
She is survived by her children: Emil Stevens and his wife Carol of Chesterfield, Mo., Michael Stevens and his wife Candy of Prescott, Ariz., and her daughter Blanche Young of Spring City, Pa. Grandchildren include Michael Stevens Jr., Jason Young, and Gregory (Stevens) Morarity; and great-grandchildren, Noel (Stevens) Nuss, Zackary Young, Abagail and Natalie Young (twins). She is also survived by her loving sister Sally McKee.
She was an extremely creative person, curious about everything and constantly widening her horizons. Always there to lend a hand or get involved in a project. She loved entertaining family and friends, and she never met a stranger but always a new friend. Her Grandson Jason "painted" a beautiful picture of what she was like with the following heartfelt tribute: "Thoughts of someone more amazing than most. Someone who flew when little did. Someone who made changes not because they were cool, but felt compelled. Someone who saw a blank canvas as a way to not only express one's self but open the eyes of others if only for a glance. Words cannot express my thoughts - to paint a better picture than what I've seen with my eyes and felt with my heart thru her ...."
Her celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Chester County Art Association, 100 North Bradford Ave., West Chester, PA 19382; or Rollins College, 1000 Holt Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789.
