Hickory, N. C. (UPI) -- Mrs. Helen Maravich, wife of Appalachian State University basketball Coach Press Maravich and mother of basketball star Pete Maravich, died Wednesday night of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said today.
A spokesman at the Catawba County sheriff's office said Mrs. Maravich died at Catawba Memorial Hospital after being transported from Boone where she lived. The spokesman said the death had been ruled a suicide.
Deputy Jerry Shockley said officers were summoned by Mrs. Maravich's 10-year-old daughter Diana. Maravich was not at home at the time, he said.
Shockley said that a .22 caliber Derringer was found in the home. He said Mrs. Maravich suffered a single wound to the right side of the head.
Press Maravich formerly coached at North Carolina State and Louisiana State where he tutored his famous son during a record-breaking collegiate career. Pete Maravich went on to fame in the National Basketball Association.
Mrs. Maravich's body will be flown sometime today to her home town in Aliquippa, Pa. A spokesman at Grand Reinsturdbant Funeral Home in Boone said memorial services are set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Elijah Eastern Orthodox Church.
