Grace was born in Arkansas to Charles Wesley Burks and Cordie W. Alexander. Grace's family lived first in Hico (Benton County) and later in Mena (Polk County). By the age of 17, Grace had moved to Comanche Country in Oklahoma, where she was married to Gilbert Frederick Walker in 1917. Together, they had four known children: Catherine, Betty Lou, Marguerite, and Gilbert F. Walker Jr. Gilbert Sr. and Grace were divorced around 1930. She next wed John Lafayette Taylor, and together they had one son: Robert Marland Taylor. After the death of her second husband, Grace and her children lived in McAlester, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. She was living in San Diego County, California, at the time of her death in 1964, but was buried near the home of her son Gilbert (in Whittier).
