He was born Horace Scott DeFord to William DeFord & Mary Kate (nee - Moats) of Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1931, Scott and his brother John Henry DeFord were put in a orphanage in Knoxville by their widowed mother. In Aug 1932, Scott was adopted by (Ocie) Osceola Casteel & wife Lennie Webb-Casteel, taking on his new name of James Nelson Casteel.
He was a retired funeral director and embalmer having worked for Brewer Funeral Home and Mann's Mortuary. He was a veteran of the US ARMY.
He was preceded in death by his brother John H DeFord; half brother; Bob Smith and half sisters; Mamie "Teet" Smith-Duncan
His survivors are; his mother Mary Kate Smith; wife, Mrs Linda Casteel; half brothers Billy Joe Smith of Knoxville; and Jack Smith (Fern) of Lenoir City; half sisters; June Smith-Newcomb of Mars, PA; Dorothy "Dukie" Smith-Kagley of Knoxville; daughters,Judene Muncey and Diane Huff all of Knoxville; step son, Ronnie Smith of Jefferson City; nephew John H DeFord-Williams (Jean) of Columbia, MD, five grandchildren;four great-grandchildren; special friends; Gertrude Johnson and Granville Estep.
