Dick was born in Spokane, Washington. He lived there with his parents Cecilia (Fosley) and Joseph Alden. He had three siblings: Jack, Toody, and Pat. He married De Lores Connors on May 4, 1946. Together they had eight children: Patricia, Kathleen, Margaret, Marianne, Diane, Joseph, Richard and Thomas.

Dick enlisted in the Army on June 26, 1943 as a Private; he worked as a surgical technician and received the Bronze Star.

Dick and Dee lived in Spokane for a few years after getting married and then they moved east to Newark, Ohio which was a small town in those days. In the late 60's they packed up and moved to Concord, California so Dick could work making the electric third rail for BART. Dick and Dee joined St. Bonaventure Church where in his retirement years Dick volunteered with the Food Pantry and Loaves & Fishes Program. He was also a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus.

When his boys were young Dick coached Little League, he was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Additionally he served 32 years as a member of the De La Salle White Coats, he always wanted to know where your ticket was and wouldn't let you into the game without one.

Dick was the patriarch of the Alden family; he was survived by all his children (Patsy, Kathy, Peggy, Marianne, Diane and her husband Bob, Joe and his wife Pam, Rich and his wife Liz, Tom and his wife Patty); his grandchildren Kurt, Todd, Megan and her husband Jason, Dennis, Kathy, Bridget, Theri Ann, Ryan, Amanda, Tommy, Amy, Jessica, Katie, Gina, Clare, Delores, Joe, Rich and Bob Jr, Paula, Laura and Audrey; and his great-granddaughter Emma. Dick was also survived by his sister Cecilia and her husband John.
