Daniel Winebrenner

The subject of this sketch was born July 15, 1820 in Blair County, PA. He was the son of Christian and Abigail Chrisman Winebrenner. Ten children were born to this couple, also 10 to the father by a first wife.

He and his family left Blair County by a covered wagon for Indiana in 1846 with two brothers. The country was almost completely covered with timber. The couple relocated in Wayne County, IN. Daniel was married in Blair County, PA to Elizabeth Hoover who was born July 17, 1823 in Blair County.

The following spring of 1847, Daniel and his family left Wayne County and settled in Huntington County near Look Creek Church of the Brethren. It was in or near this vicinity he spent the next 40 or more years, during which time nine children were born. It was in this community that he became a successful business man and farmer, owning at one time several hundred acres of land and finding the time to operate a grain threshing machine he owned for some 25 or 30 years. In addition to this, he owned and operated a blacksmith and wagon shop.

Daniel and Elizabeth were the parents of 11 children, three of whom died in infancy: Sarah Jane, John Wesley, Mary Catharine, Abigail, George Washington, Daniel, Alva, Ira Merrill, Martha Penina, Elizabeth Matilda, Julia Isabel and Joseph Franklin.

They were active members of the Church of the Brethren until their death. Elizabeth died May 12, 1887 at the age of 63 years and is buried in the Lancaster Cemetery.

In 1888 Daniel married Mrs. Lucinda Fist a widow with five children. Sometime after this marriage, he bought a home in the town of Huntington. He lived there for some time, but his health failing, he become homesick for his old neighbors and friends, so built a home near his old place. He died before it was completed on Nov. 4, 1893 at the age of 73. He is buried in the Lancaster Cemetery.
